Bem Brasil is a leading provider of frozen precooked French fries in Brazil. The company today announced that it has strengthened its logistics capacity with the construction of two automated rack-supported buildings from Mecalux S.A. at its plant in Perdizes (Minas Gerais).
In a country of 211 million people, Bem Brasil covers up to 55% of the national demand for products like smiley fries (carinhas) and onion rings, among other specialties. The company also exports to South America, Taiwan, Singapore, the U.S., and Mexico, where it holds a commercial partnership with Walmart.
Over 20 years, Bem Brasil has become the national leader in its sector and one of Brazil’s most popular household brands. Its stated mission is to offer high-quality, convenient food while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability, which is why it turned to Mecalux when creating its latest logistics centers.
Mecalux handles 550,000 tons of frozen foods annually
Both Bem Brasil facilities are equipped with Mecalux’s Automated Pallet Shuttle system, which includes a stacker crane, and are supervised by Easy WMS warehouse management software. They efficiently store and distribute over 550,000 tons of frozen foods annually.
The Automated Pallet Shuttle is a compact storage system that employs an electric shuttle to load and unload pallets from racking automatically. The stacker crane assists the shuttle, automatically moving it from entry/exit points to the various storage channels.
With over 55 years of experience, Mecalux develops automated storage, warehouse management software, and metal racking systems for all sectors. The company has an extensive worldwide distribution network, 12 manufacturing plants, seven research and development centers, and a workforce of more than 5,500 employees.
Bem Brasil sees production and revenue increases
The two Mecalux rack-supported buildings have provided 66,000 pallet positions. Automation has helped Bem Brasil increase production by 10% and revenue by 30% over the past year, the company claimed.
Inside the warehouses, kept at -13 °F (-25 °C), the Automated Pallet Shuttle system inserts and retrieves goods autonomously. Conveyors connect the storage and production areas to maintain a continuous flow of raw materials and finished products. This robotic infrastructure eliminates the need for lighting during operations, improving energy efficiency, Mecalux said.
Bem Brasil ensures the quality and traceability of its frozen products with Easy WMS, which monitors inbound, putaway, and outbound processes in real time. The Mecalux warehouse management system applies the FEFO (first-expired, first-out) method to prioritize the shipment of products with the nearest expiration date. By optimizing inventory turnover, this strategy minimizes food waste.
“Mecalux’s solutions give us complete control over our stored goods,” said Célio Zero, operations manager at Bem Brasil. “That translates into faster, safer, and more cost-effective logistics operations.”
