Cyngn Inc. last week announced its 22nd U.S. patent for its autonomous vehicle technologies. U.S. Patent No. 12,246,733 introduces a cloud-based computation method for autonomous driving that the company said can drastically reduce onboard hardware requirements.

“Since August 2023, we have secured 12 additional patents, reflecting our relentless pursuit of innovation in autonomous technology,” stated Lior Tal, CEO of Cyngn. “This milestone not only safeguards our intellectual property, but also underscores our dedication to providing real-world solutions that elevate productivity and efficiency in industrial operations.”

Founded in 2013, Cyngn develops and deploys autonomous vehicle technology for industries such as automotive manufacturing and logistics. Its DriveMod kit can be installed on new industrial vehicles at end of line or via retrofit.

The ability of the DriveMod Forklift to navigate indoors or outdoors earned the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company a 2025 RBR50 Robotics Innovation Award. Learn more at the RBR50 Gala at the Robotics Summit & Expo.

Patent covers cloud-based computation

The new patent for “System and Methods of Off-Board Centric Autonomous Driving Computation” allows vehicles to transmit sensor data to cloud servers. These servers perform functions such as environment mapping, decision-making, and route planning before sending driving commands back to the vehicle.

This offloading of tasks enhances efficiency, enabling lighter and cost-effective autonomous vehicles (AVs) while maintaining advanced safety and precision in driving algorithms, said Cyngn.

The company added that the patent’s fleet management capabilities enable synchronized operations of multiple vehicles through a centralized cloud infrastructure.

Cyngn builds its intellectual property portfolio

“The grant of this patent marks a significant milestone in Cyngn’s intellectual property strategy, further bolstering its position in the AV industry,” said the company. Cyngn cited its 21st patent, which it received for “System and Methods of Adaptive Object-Based Decision Making for Autonomous Driving.”

Cyngn listed its U.S. patents:

Enterprise Autonomy Suite deployments to grow

Cyngn noted that its Enterprise Autonomy Suite includes products such as the DriveMod Kit and Cyngn Insight for fleet management, teleoperation, and analytics. This enables customers to integrate self-driving technology into their operations without high upfront costs or the need to completely replace existing vehicle investments, it said.

The company added that its systems allow existing workforces to increase productivity and efficiency. It claimed that its offerings address challenges such as labor shortages, costly safety incidents, and increased consumer demand for e-commerce.

In January, Cyngn raised $33 million to scale production and deployment of its DriveMod tuggers and forklifts.
