Gap Inc. recently announced that it has deployed OPEX Corp.’s Sure Sort technology with the help of technology integrator VARGO.

“E-commerce growth brings challenges that must be addressed proactively,” said Robert Nilsson, chief commercial officer at VARGO.

“Retailers struggle to meet consumer expectations due to package delivery issues, automation limitations, space constraints, and labor concerns,” he added. “Partnering with OPEX helps us introduce technologies to manage current and future e-commerce volumes while improving productivity and optimizing labor.”

VARGO integrates Sure Sort and WES

In 2025, VARGO integrated OPEX Sure Sort in one of Gap’s distribution centers in Gallatin, Tenn. The Dublin, Ohio-based company also integrated its continuous flow warehouse execution system (WES) to optimize efficiency and maintain a steady stream of products to Sure Sort.

Sure Sort is an automated putwall designed for peak efficiency, according to OPEX. The system uses iBOT sorting robots to quickly sort a wide variety of SKUs in a single pass.

The vertical design of Sure Sort with iBOTs allows a smaller footprint in the warehouse. This ensures that it is versatile, scalable, configurable, and cost-effective, OPEX said.

“Partnering with experienced integrators like VARGO enables us to deliver scalable, high-impact automation solutions,” said Alex Stevens, president of warehouse automation at OPEX. “By combining our Sure Sort technology with VARGO’s WES expertise, we help clients like Gap Inc. boost efficiency and meet the demands of modern retail.”

For nearly five decades, OPEX said it has worked closely with clients to develop customized, scalable systems. The Moorestown, N.J.-based company creates systems for document, mail, and warehouse automation. It has facilities in Pennsauken, N.J., and Plano, Texas, as well as in France, Germany, Switzerland, the U.K., and Australia.

OPEX demonstrates results

VARGO and OPEX said that with the implementation of one Sure Sort system, Gap was able to boost picking productivity by over 10% and automate the work of five manual put-to-order work stations.

OPEX said this system increased efficiency, making it one of the top-performing machines in the OPEX network of more than 900 systems.

In October, OPEX Corp. said it had installed its new Sure Sort X Automated Sorting System at an Alliance Entertainment warehouse in Kentucky. The warehouse automation offers speed, efficiency, a compact footprint, and versatility in handling sorting jobs of different sizes.

Alliance Entertainment said implementing Sure Sort X advanced its already robust supply chain. This allows it to meet increasing demand with greater speed and flexibility.
