Geneva10 Fulfillment, or G10, wanted to increase pick rates from manual batch and cluster picking operations for two of its e-commerce clients. The third-party logistics provider, or 3PL, turned to mobile robots and Zebra Symmetry Fulfillment.

Zebra Symmetry Fulfillment uses artificial intelligence and combines the functions of a warehouse execution system (WES) with robot fleet management and analytics, according to Zebra Technologies Corp. The fulfillment system includes the Zebra Connect autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), wearable technologies, and software.

“We are excited to integrate the Zebra Symmetry Fulfillment into our operations as we continue to evolve and innovate to meet the growing demands of the logistics and e-commerce landscape,” stated Mark Becker, co-founder and president of G10 Fulfillment. “This technology will increase our pick rates by over 40% and provide our employees with innovative solutions to better serve our customers.”

Zebra Symmetry Fulfillment reduces AMR fleet size

According to Zebra’s latest Warehousing Vision Study, 93% of warehouse associates agree that new technologies are essential for attracting and retaining talent. Technologies like AMRs, mobile computers, and wearables have become essential for streamlining workflows, simplifying tasks, increasing throughput, and driving efficiencies in warehouse operations, it asserted.

Zebra said its order-fulfillment system can add value by using inexpensive carts for buffering, reducing reliance on additional robots and enabling workers to focus on more strategic tasks. The company claimed that Zebra Symmetry Fulfillment can also minimize costs while maximizing output, providing more cubic capacity to handle 150% to 300% more volume compared with traditional AMRs with integrated payloads.

“With purpose-built software, powerful analytics, and a customer-first design, Zebra Robotics Automation empowers businesses to streamline their operations and achieve new levels of profitability and performance,” said Matt Wicks, vice president and general manager of robotics automation at Zebra Technologies.

“The continued adoption of Zebra Symmetry Fulfillment across the market is indicative of the trust 3PLs place in the solution to help scale and grow their businesses with real business impact,” he said.

Wearables and scanners heighten human-machine collaboration

‘The integration of Fetch AMRs and Zebra technologies really leans into the strengths of Zebra,” Wicks told Automated Warehouse. “By merging handheld and scanning devices with robotics, workers and robots can work extremely closely.”

Zebra Symmetry Fulfillment includes handheld and ring scanners, robots, and software to guide workflows, he noted.

“Workers can look at the handheld, which tells them what to pick and scan,” explained Wicks. “One challenge in the market has been that picking was throttled by the speed of the robots. Our AMRs are orchestrated to be at the right locations, so all the workers have to do is go to the next position. This doesn’t limit the human pickers, since the robots will be seamlessly next to them.”

In addition, the system can eliminate AMR wait times and increase pick density, said Zebra. This enables businesses to reduce their robot count by up to 30% compared with legacy systems, further driving cost savings and operational efficiency.

Optimized pick paths ensure that workers and robots are synchronized, allocating orders to maximize productivity, said the Lincolnshire, Ill.-based company.

“With real-time insights into workflows, operators can prioritize orders rather than take a swarm-based or a zone-based approach,” Wicks said. “The analytics say who’s got what order, when orders were completed, and when items are going to be picked to robots. There’s no guesswork for managers.”

G10 expects to meet strict SLAs

G10 said it expects to increase productivity, reduce costs, and manage higher order volumes more effectively with Zebra Symmetry Fulfillment and the Zebra Connect AMRs. The robots and software will enable the 3PL to improve service delivery and meet stringent service-level agreements (SLAs).

Wicks added that Zebra’s cloud-based fulfillment system is easy to deploy, since the AMRs have SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) and don’t need fiducials or other infrastructure to navigate. “Just integrate it to the WMS, map the facility, and get orders in — it’s very cost-effective,” he said.
