Data, artificial intelligence, and automation are converging to help retailers. GreyOrange Inc. yesterday introduced SoftFence, a virtual shielding technology that’s part of its gStore retail software-as-a-service platform.

The Roswell, Ga.-based company said it designed gStore to enhance store execution through real-time inventory management and intelligent tasking. More than 250 stores with overhead radio frequency identification (RFID) have already implemented the platform, it said.

“gStore’s SoftFence introduces virtual zoning capabilities for retailers, which is a step towards comprehending their portfolio for implementing handheld-only stores,” stated Troy Siwek, gStore general manager at GreyOrange.

“SoftFence builds on gStore’s cutting-edge capabilities by incorporating selective reading, signal manipulation, and dynamic control to ensure data security and precise inventory accuracy by creating distinct store sections – including backroom vs. sales floor – without any physical barriers,” he added.

SoftFence offers secure, real-time monitoring

The smart algorithm-driven technology in SoftFence prevents RFID signal leakage and allows only authorized readers to access tag information, said GreyOrange. This prevents unauthorized scans by manipulating signal strength and timing, allowing retailers to further optimize omnichannel fulfillment and streamline operations.

“SoftFence also supports real-time adjustments based on store needs, offering unmatched flexibility,” the company claimed.

Moreover, SoftFence can integrate with existing systems, enabling implementation without additional hardware investments. GreyOrange said the platform uses machine learning algorithms to analyze RFID signals, improving stock-taking accuracy and reducing read errors.

In addition, SoftFence can optimize sub-location data, improve restocking efficiency, and be a cost-effective tool, said the company. GreyOrange asserted that “SoftFence is the next evolution in gStore’s mission to empower retailers with comprehensive, easily deployable systems that elevate store performance, improve customer experiences, and simplify operations.”

GreyOrange provides gStore, AMRs

Founded in 2012, GreyOrange said gStore enables customers to “achieve 98% inventory accuracy, reduce operational costs, and increase sales with real-time insights and seamless store execution.” It described the platform as the “Google Maps” of inventory, with updates and AI capabilities so stores always know where their products are.

In addition to gStore, GreyOrange also offers goods-to-person (G2P) autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), tote-to-person automation, sortation and conveying robots, and pallet movers and forklifts.

In August, the company announced an expansion of its Intralogistics and Case Pick Ranger portfolio. It introduced the Ranger Forklift XXL for case picking and Ranger Forklift AnyPallet for close pallet handling.

Gartner Inc. recently recognized GreyOrange, which has offices across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, in its 2024 “Hype Cycle for Mobile Robots and Drones.”
