Coca-Cola HBC Ireland and Northern Ireland, the strategic bottling partner for The Coca-Cola Company, has installed a new finished goods warehouse in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, with semi-automated Pallet Shuttle system from Mecalux.
Coca-Cola HBC is responsible for the manufacture, distribution, sale, and channel marketing of its beverage portfolio as well as locally owned brands. The company said it offers beverages for all occasions and distributes premium spirits ranges.
“As a fast-moving consumer goods company, speed is everything,” said Karl Quinlivan, logistics route to market manager at Coca-Cola HBC Ireland and Northern Ireland. “We need to manage our warehousing, inventory control, and distribution processes efficiently to optimize customer service and operate cost-effectively.”
Mecalux helps Coca-Cola make the most of its space
Opened in 2010, the Knockmore Hill production facility in Lisburn operates nine production lines and continues to expand its operations. It supplies beverage brands throughout the island of Ireland, ranging from Coca-Cola classics to Dr Pepper, Monster Energy, Powerade, Schweppes, and Sprite, as well as various locally owned brands, including Deep RiverRock.
The new warehouse maximizes available space with Mecalux’s semi-automated Pallet Shuttle system. The company said it provides high-density storage, direct access to 9,000 pallets, and strict inventory control, supporting distribution to the island of Ireland.
The Automated Pallet Shuttle is a compact storage system that employs an electric shuttle to load and unload pallets from racking automatically. The stacker crane assists the shuttle, automatically moving it from entry/exit points to the various storage channels.
The storage system with Coca-Cola is equipped with four motorized shuttles. Once operators position them in the storage lanes, these vehicles deposit and retrieve pallets autonomously. Mecalux’s warehouse control system (WCS) enables staffers to issue commands to the shuttles via tablets.
Partners innovate toward Industry 4.0
Coca-Cola HBC said its decision to equip the new finished-goods warehouse with Mecalux’s semi-automated Pallet Shuttle system demonstrates its commitment to innovation.
“By integrating new technologies into our manufacturing and logistics processes, we’re making steady progress towards Industry 4.0, enhancing efficiency and quality at every stage,” said Quinlivan.
With over 55 years of experience, Mecalux develops automated storage, warehouse management software, and metal racking systems for all sectors. The company said it has an extensive worldwide distribution network, 12 manufacturing plants, seven research and development centers, and a workforce of more than 5,500 employees.
